Ignite Borders is inspired by the major challenge of unemployment in Africa, despite the show of substantial growth performance of multiple African countries. What is the problem of unemployment in Africa? It can be stated very briefly albeit with oversimplification, as follows: Africa is a continent in which the vast majority of the potential workforce, often as much as 70%, is either workless or marginally employed and generally with very low productivity. With high levels of unemployment and vulnerable employment on the rise, the world of work in Africa is still facing tremendous challenges in terms of job creation and sustainability, warns a new ILO report.
Further studies carried out by the ILO, especially the Jobs and Skills Programme for Africa (JASPA), the percentage of the labour force involved in some form of informal sector activity is typically over 50 percent and sometimes goes as high as 70 per cent. Moreover, African women hold two-thirds of all jobs in the non-agricultural informal sector yet they make 70 cents on the dollar compared to men.
Young people in Africa are eager to start their own businesses with up to 60 percent of 18 to 34 year old Africans, who took part in a joint study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor and Youth Business International, stating that they were hopeful about the availability of good business opportunities and believed they had the skills and knowledge to start a business. Ignite Borders aims to spark the required confidence within aspiring businesspersons in Africa through the provision of knowledge regarding entrepreneurship.
